Can Chiropractic Help Tinnitus?

Woman at home hand on headImagine a constant ringing, roaring or buzzing sound in your ears that never goes away—it’s there when you’re talking, driving, working, even when you’re trying to sleep. This is what tinnitus sufferers live with on a daily basis. Although the ringing may let up from time to time, it always comes back.

Tinnitus has a number of possible causes, including permanent hearing loss, persistent ear infection, head or neck injuries, and certain medications or medical conditions. But in many cases, there is simply no apparent reason for the symptoms.

How Chiropractic May Help

Chiropractic care is all about restoring proper nervous system function. It accomplishes this by removing misalignments and restoring movement to “stuck” joints that can be putting pressure on nerves, interfering with normal communication between the brain and body. When the nervous system is free of interference and working optimally, the rest of the body can work at a higher level as well, and healing can take place.

With tinnitus, often the joints of the neck, jaw and/or cranial bones (yes, there are joints in your skull!) are not moving as they should. A chiropractor will do a thorough examination and assess the function of these joints, then create a care plan to restore optimal alignment and motion.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that allows your mouth to open and close. It’s located very close to the ears, and tension in this joint can often be the culprit behind inner ear issues such as those related to tinnitus.

Relieving tension in the TMJ, along with any stuck joints in the neck or tightness in the cranial bones may help reduce or eliminate the ringing in your ears.
